No bustle, no subway; New Yorkers find a changed city

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stripped of its bustle and mostly cut off from the world, New York was left wondering Tuesday when its particular way of life ? carried by subway, lit by skyline and powered by 24-hour deli ? would return.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the power company said it could be the weekend before the lights come on for hundreds of thousands of people plunged into darkness by what was once Hurricane Sandy.

Bloomberg said it could also be four or five days before the subway, which suffered the worst damage in its 108-year history, is running again. All 10 of the tunnels that carry New Yorkers under the East River were flooded.

Sandy killed 18 people in New York City, the mayor said. The dead included two who drowned in a home and one who was in bed when a tree fell on an apartment. A 23-year-old woman died after stepping into a puddle near a live electrical wire.

"This was a devastating storm, maybe the worst that we have ever experienced," Bloomberg said.

For the 8 million people who live here, the city was a different place one day after the storm.

In normal times, rituals bring a sense of order to the chaos of life in the nation's largest city: Stop at Starbucks on the morning walk with the dog, drop the kids off at P.S. 39, grab a bagel.

On Tuesday, those rituals were suspended, with little indication when they would come back. Schools were shut for a second day and were closed Wednesday, too.

Coffee shops, normally open as close as a block apart, were closed in some neighborhoods. New York found itself less caffeinated and curiously isolated from the world, although by afternoon it had begun to struggle back to life.

Some bridges into the city reopened at midday, but the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan, and the Holland Tunnel, between New York and New Jersey, remained closed. And service on the three commuter railroads that run between the city and its suburbs was still suspended.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said bus service would be restored at 5 p.m. EDT, on a limited schedule but free. He said he hoped there would be full service on Wednesday, also free.

The New York Stock Exchange was closed for a second day, the first time that has happened because of weather since the 19th century, but said it would reopen on Wednesday.

Swaths of the city were not so lucky. Consolidated Edison, the power company, said it would be four days before the last of the 337,000 customers in Manhattan and Brooklyn who lost power have electricity again.

For the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and Westchester County, with 442,000 outages, it could take a week, Con Ed said. Floodwater led to explosions that disabled a power substation on Monday night, contributing to the outages.

New Yorkers were left without power to charge their iPods and Kindles and Nooks for the subway. Not that there was a subway. People clustered around electrical outlets at a Duane Reade drugstore to power up their phones.

At a small market called Hudson Gourmet, in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, cashiers made change by candlelight and shoppers used flashlights to scour the shelves.

Lee Leshen used the light from his phone to make his selections ? three boxes of linguine and a can of tomatoes. His power was out, but the gas in his stove worked, so he could cook. He said he almost never cooks but is learning.

John Tricoli, his wife, Christine, and their 6-year-old twins spent Monday night holed up in their 11th-floor apartment in one of several lower Manhattan office buildings that were converted to condos in the 2000s and have drawn young families. Once the power went off at 7 p.m., there was a major challenge ? no TV.

By candlelight, "we colored, we read, we played games ? old school," Christine Tricoli said as the family emerged to go on a walk on Tuesday that started with a trek down 11 flights of stairs.

"There was even talking," she said.

The city modified its taxi rules and encouraged drivers to pick up more than one passenger at a time, putting New Yorkers in the otherwise unthinkable position of having to share a yellow cab with a stranger.

Livery cabs and black sedans, normally allowed to pick up passengers only by arrangement, were allowed to stop for people hailing rides on the street.

The landscape of the city changed in a matter of hours.

A fire destroyed as many as 100 houses in a flooded beachfront neighborhood in Queens. Firefighters said the water was chest-high on the street and they had to use a boat to make rescues.

In Brooklyn, Faye Schwartz surveyed the damage in her Brooklyn neighborhood, where cars were strewn like leaves, planters were deposited in intersections and green Dumpsters were tossed on their sides.

"Oh, Jesus. Oh, no," she said.

The chief line of demarcation Tuesday ran through Manhattan's Chelsea section. Above 25th Street, delis did business and traffic lights worked. Below 25th Street, nothing.

For some New Yorkers, the aftermath of the storm stirred memories of the blackout of August 2003, when a cascading power failure in the Northeast left the city without power for parts of two days. This time, as then, there was no sign of looting or widespread crime. Nine people in all were arrested on charges they stole from a gas station, an electronics store and a clothing store in Queens.

But the 2003 blackout was a communal experience, with strangers lounging on stoops and bars blaring music into darkened neighborhoods. This time, people had to stay indoors and wait.

At a darkened luxury high-rise building in lower Manhattan, resident manager John Sarich was sending porters with flashlights up and down 47 flights of stairs to check on people who live there.

He said most people stayed put despite calls to evacuate. One pregnant woman started having contractions, and Sarich said that before the power went out, he nervously researched online how to deliver a baby.

"I said, 'Oh boy, I'm in trouble,'" Sarich said. The woman managed to find a cab to take her to a hospital.

Bloomberg told reporters that the storm deaths were tragic but said the city pulled through better than some people expected, considering the magnitude of the storm.

The mayor said: "We will get through the days ahead by doing what we always do in tough times ? by standing together, shoulder to shoulder, ready to help a neighbor, comfort a stranger and get the city we love back on its feet."

Nintendo of America have just revealed via Twitter that a new US Wii U ad campaign will premiere tomorrow on the Wii U Facebook page.

They also released ?a behind-the-scenes? photo of the campaign, pictured above (full-size version available here).

The image shows a collection of huge cubes stacked on top and beside one another, each with a different colour. It seems to suggest different rooms, so I?d speculate that different players will be seen playing the Wii U console in each room. This would support Nintendo?s marketing strategy to cater to every audience, as they are striving to do with the Wii and Wii U.

With Nintendo?s budget we can surely expect something big tomorrow. Nintendo fans, are you excited?

Scientists raise alarm over undersea methane

NOAA

In this visualization, the Gulf Stream is seen as the dark red current coming into the Atlantic from the Gulf of Mexico.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

A changing Gulf Stream off the East Coast has destabilized frozen methane deposits trapped under nearly 4,000 square miles of seafloor, scientists reported Wednesday. And since methane is even more potent than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas, the researchers said, any large-scale release could have significant climate impacts.

Temperature changes in the Gulf Stream are "rapidly destabilizing methane hydrate along a broad swathe of the North American margin," the experts said in a study published Wednesday in the peer-reviewed journal Nature.

Using seismic records and ocean models, the team estimated that 2.5 gigatonnes of frozen methane hydrate are being destabilized and could separate into methane gas and water.

It is not clear if that is happening yet, but that methane gas would have the potential to rise up through the ocean and into the atmosphere, where it would add to the greenhouse gases warming Earth.

The 2.5 gigatonnes isn't enough to trigger a sudden climate shift, but the team worries that other areas around the globe might be seeing a similar destabilization.?

USGS

"It is unlikely that the western North Atlantic margin is the only area experiencing changing ocean currents," they noted. "Our estimate ... may therefore represent only a fraction of the methane hydrate currently destabilizing globally."

The wider destabilization evidence, co-author Ben Phrampus told NBC News, includes data from the Arctic and Alaska's northern slope in the Beaufort Sea.

And it's not just under the seafloor that methane has been locked up. Some Arctic land area are seeing permafrost thaw, which could release methane stored there as well.

An expert who was not part of the study said it suggests that methane could become a bigger climate factor than carbon dioxide.

"We may approach a turning point" from a warming driven by man-made carbon dioxide to a warming driven by methane, Jurgen Mienert, the geology department chair at Norway's University of Tromso, told NBC News.

"The interactions between the warming Arctic Ocean and the potentially huge methane-ice reservoirs beneath the Arctic?Ocean floor point towards?increasing instability," he added.

For thousands of years, permafrost has trapped Siberia's carbon-rich soil, a compost of Ice Age plant and animal remains. But global warming is melting the permafrost and exposing the soil, causing highly flammable methane to seep out. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

He also noted, however, that "one of the big unknowns?is?the magnitude of rapid methane escape from the ocean floor, and how natural filter?systems react and affect the future ocean, its environment and the climate."

Relate: Thawing Arctic permafrost is releasing methane

Another unknown is what caused the Gulf Stream changes, said Phrampus, an earth sciences PhD candidate at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

"Multiple events can play a factor, such as changing sea level or an addition of cold/fresh water from the north," Phrampus said, adding he was?hopeful that the changes might be "reversible under their own influence."

But, he added, "we need more data to resolve this, and we are currently investigating this process."

Big week of BCS scoreboard watching for Oregon

This is a big week for Oregon's BCS title hopes.

No, not because the second-ranked Ducks play hapless Colorado. That'll be a breeze.

The teams directly ahead of Oregon in the BCS standings (Alabama, Florida and Kansas State), and the one right behind (Notre Dame), are all playing ranked foes Saturday.

So the Ducks, fourth in the BCS standings, could get some of the help they need to move up ? or they could slip further back in the race to the national championship game.

It's a bit early to get overly worked up about the BCS pecking order. There are 11 undefeated teams in major college football, and the most there could be at the end of the season is seven. But you can whittle that down to four serious contenders for a spot in the BCS title game in Miami.

Ohio State is ineligible. Ohio University doesn't play a tough enough schedule. The Big East champion probably won't be able to climb over the top teams from the Southeastern Conference, Pac-12 and Big 12, and Notre Dame.

Out of the top five teams, Oregon seems to be the most likely to get left out of the national title game if more than two teams finish unbeaten. Excuse Ducks fans if they are a bit skittish. The BCS hasn't always worked out in their team's favor (see 2001 and '05).

Here's an example of the Ducks' problems: Notre Dame is at Oklahoma. If the Fighting Irish win, there's a chance they could jump the Ducks in the BCS standings the way Kansas State did last week. If Oklahoma wins, it makes Kansas State's victory at Oklahoma look even better and could push the Wildcats further ahead of the Ducks.

The Ducks' problems come down to schedule. Oregon's opponents so far just haven't been particularly good, and it's especially weighing the Ducks down in the computer ratings.

Oregon is second in both polls that are used in the BCS standings, but sixth in the computer rankings.

And part of Oregon's strength of schedule problem stems from a game it was supposed to play against Kansas State.

The Wildcats and Ducks had agreed to play a home-and-home series in 2011 and '12. Oregon asked to reschedule when it got a shot to play LSU in Texas last year.

With the Big 12 headed toward playing nine conferences games, Kansas State suggested to cancel the whole thing. The Ducks agreed.

That left the Ducks with Arkansas State, Fresno State and Tennessee Tech to tuneup with this season. Oregon easily dispatched all three, but two months into the season the Ducks still don't have a marquee victory.

Obviously, Kansas State couldn't have known how this would play out, but it's looking like one of the best decisions coach Bill Snyder has made since returning to the sidelines.

After Colorado, the Ducks get into the teeth of their conference schedule with Southern California, Stanford and Oregon State all coming up, plus a possible Pac-12 title game (and maybe a rematch against USC). Win all those and the computers will spit out some different numbers on the Ducks.

Will it be enough to catch Kansas State if the Wildcats keep winning? Or fend off Notre Dame? Stay tuned.

The picks:

No. 14 Clemson (minus 12) at Wake Forest

Tigers can't afford another ACC slip ... CLEMSON 31-17.

HBS Students Dish On The Interview | Poets and Quants

If you?re a male applicant to the Harvard Business School and about to be interviewed by admissions, you should wear a well-fitting black, grey or navy blue suit with a non-distracting shirt and tie. Deodorant is a must but cologne is a no-no.

If you?re a woman, the length of your skirt should be at least at the knee. Your suit color and style should be simple and classic, with closed toed pumps with a heel height of between one and three inches. The flashy baubles are best left at home along with any strong fragrance.

You should make sure you?ve eaten a ?substantial breakfast? and arrive at Dillon House, where the admissions staff is located on campus, at least 20 minutes early.

?FIRST-HAND INSIGHT, ADVICE AND ANALYSIS? FROM CURRENT STUDENTS

That?s the advice from the just-published ?Unofficial Harvard Business School Interview Guide,? put together annually by the staff of The Harbus, the school?s MBA student newspaper. The 43-page guide is based on ?first-hand insight, advice and analysis? from current HBS students as well as ?real interview questions from real interviews of real students,? according to Editors Bart Clareman and Kate Lewis as well as Publisher Alex Pak.

?We worked hard to get the first-hand advice not only from past interviewees but from students who successfully navigated in the process and enrolled at HBS,? says Co-Editor Clareman. ??Applicants know that HBS puts a lot of importance on the interview, and we believe this source is the most accurate and the most helpful for prospective students who want to know what to expect on the big day.?

The editors organize the questions they received from a survey of the first-year class upon their arrival on campus into six main categories: experience, leadership, career, current events, curriculum, and situational. ?The experience, leadership, and career buckets prompt interviewees to tell ?their story? by reflecting on past challenges and achievements. The questions on current global events or the HBS curriculum allow admissions to assess an applicant?s perspective. The situational bucket helps candidates prepare for the occasional ?off-the-wall? ask that requires on-the-spot resourcefulness.

SOME 79 INTERVIEW QUESTIONS ASKED OF CANDIDATES

In any case, this year?s edition of the Harbus guide includes 20 pages of interview questions, 79 questions in all, each with a couple of paragraphs of advice analysis. There?s a step-by-step walkthrough to help applicants prep for the interview, along with suggested weekday and weekend add-ons for your trip to Harvard, and advice on how to compose a follow-up thank you note (crafting a handwritten note, the students say, ?can help you stand out in the eyes of the interviewer.?

Given some of the oddball questions you might get, the guide is definitely worth the $50?which goes to support the non-profit student newspaper. It can be downloaded as a PDF file here. At the very least, it will give you the basics, however obvious, and prepare you for the off-the-wall question that may very well come your way. And while the questions are from actual Harvard admission interviews, they?re pretty much what you could expect at any top business school. So even if you?re bound for Stanford, Wharton, Chicago or Kellogg, you?ll find plenty of value in Harvard?s interview guide.

Examples of some of those curve ball questions:

The Internet Revolution is a Liberty Revolution | Hawaii Reporter

BY CONGRESSMAN RON PAUL, R-TEXAS - Until the late 1990s, individuals interested in Austrian economics, U.S. constitutional history, and libertarian philosophy had few sources of information.? They had to spend hours scouring used book stores or the back pages of obscure libertarian periodicals to find the great works of Mises, Rothbard, Hayek, and other giants of liberty.? Local library and university collections ignored libertarian politics and economics.

Today, however, the greatest classics of libertarian thought, libertarian philosophy, and libertarian economics are available instantly to anyone with internet access.? Thanks to the internet, it is easier than ever before for liberty activists to spread news and other information regarding the evils of government power and the benefits of freedom.? For the first time in human history, supporters of liberty around the world can share information across borders quickly and cheaply.? Without the filter of government censors, this information emboldens millions to question governments and promote liberty.

This is why liberty-minded Americans must do everything possible to oppose-- and stop-- government attempts to censor or limit the free flow of information online.

One such attempt is known as ?CISPA?, or the?Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act. ??This bill will create a monstrous coalition of big business and big government to rob Americans of their protections under the 4th?Amendment of the Constitution.

CISPA permits both the federal government and private companies to view your private online communications with?no judicial oversight,?provided they merely do so in the name of ?cybersecurity.?? But?America is a constitutional republic, not a surveillance state--?and the wildly overhyped need for security does not trump the Constitution.

?Cybersecurity? is the responsibility of companies that operate and make money in cyberspace, not taxpayers.? Those companies should develop market-based private solutions to secure their networks, servers, cloud data centers, and user/customer information.? The role of the US intelligence community is to protect the United States from military threats, not to provide corporate welfare to the private sector.? Much like the TSA at the airport, CISPA would socialize security costs and remove market incentives for private firms to protect their own investments.

Imagine security-cleared agents embedded at private companies to serve as conduits for intelligence information about their customers back to the US intelligence community-- while enjoying immunity from any existing civil or criminal laws. Imagine Google or Facebook reporting directly to the National Security Agency about the online activity of US citizens.? Imagine US government resources being wasted on a grand scale to ?assist? private companies in the global market.? All of this would become reality under CISPA.

As of this writing, it appears that the House and Senate will not agree on a final version of CISPA this year. However, the Obama administration seems ready to impose provisions of this bill by executive order if Congress does not act soon.

The past five years have seen an explosion in the liberty movement, fueled in large part by the internet. Preserving that freedom is crucial if the liberty movement is to continue its progress. Therefore, all activists in the liberty movement have a stake in the battle for internet freedom. We must be ready to come together to fight any attempt to increase government?s power over the internet, regardless of the supposed justifications. We must resist voices from both the political right and left which alternatively seek to legislate morality or enforce political correctness with force.? ?Copyright protection, pornography, cyberterrorism, gambling, and ?hate speech? are merely excuses for doing what all governments have done throughout human history: increase their size, scope, and power.

Once we understand this, we understand the critical link between internet freedom and human freedom.

Family Living in Former Meth House Gets New IKEA Furniture ...

2033-Ikea-Family-462x323

Jonathan Hankins and his wife Beth appeared on today's "Anderson Live" to discuss what happened when they discovered their dream home was once a meth lab. The home, located in Klamath Falls, Oregon, was purchased for a mere $36,000? and the family soon found out why they were experiencing breathing problems and migraine-like headaches.

Freddie Mac, which foreclosed on the house, told the couple they had to screen for asbestos and lead, but did not warn about any drug activity. A Freddie Mac spokesman said the company was unaware the house had been a meth lab. Visit HuffingtonPost.com for more on Jonathan and Beth's story.

Luckily for the Hankinses, life improvement store IKEA has stepped in to help and is giving them $14K for new furniture! IKEA just launched the third year of the "Life Improvement Project" to inspire people to make a positive impact on their homes and the lives within.

IKEA is encouraging people to share stories of what they do to improve their lives at home, and learn from tips submitted by others. Visit TheLifeImprovementProject.com to learn more. With each submitted or shared project, IKEA will make a $1 donation (up to $50,000) to Save the Children's Early Steps for School Success program.

BBC crisis deepens as new allegations emerge

LONDON (Reuters) - A crisis gripping BBC deepened on Monday after it emerged a senior producer had warned the broadcaster could be accused of a cover-up when it axed its own expose into alleged sexual abuse by a one-time TV star.

Allegations that flamboyant BBC presenter Jimmy Savile, who died last year, operated unhindered as a paedophile for years while working for the BBC have rocked the publicly funded broadcaster.

Its new head, George Entwistle, is now under pressure to explain why the BBC dropped an investigation by its Newsnight programme into Savile last year. Mark Thompson, now the New York Times Co's chief executive, was in charge of the BBC at the time.

In a programme due to be aired in Britain later on Monday, a Newsnight producer behind the investigation, Meirion Jones, said he had warned his editor that the BBC was at risk of being accused of a cover-up if it did not run the story, the BBC said.

"I was sure the story would come out one way or another and...the BBC would be accused of a cover-up," he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Knighted as a "Sir" by Queen Elizabeth, cigar-chomping Savile was one of the BBC's biggest names and most recognised television personalities, and questions have been raised about whether the broadcaster turned a blind eye to his activities.

Police investigating alleged abuse by Savile opened a criminal inquiry last week, saying more than 200 potential victims had come forward since an investigation by another British TV channel claimed he had preyed on children for decades.

Rival commercial channel ITV broadcast interviews with women who said Savile abused them when they were as young as 12, sometimes on BBC premises.

Entwistle is due to appear before parliament on Tuesday to answer what are likely to be tough questions about the case.

The BBC has launched two independent reviews of the allegations, one looking into Savile's actions and another to investigate why the Newsnight report was shelved.

It has not commented officially on the case, saying it would be inappropriate to say anything until the reviews had been concluded.

The Panorama programme, due to air in Britain on Monday night, is expected to give details of how much information the Newsnight team had on Savile at the time.

Veteran BBC foreign correspondent John Simpson said the BBC's handling of the case was the worst crisis to hit the corporation in his almost 50-year career.

"I don't think the BBC has handled it terribly well," he said, according to the BBC. "All we have as an organisation is the trust of the people, the people that watch us and listen to us and if we don't have that, if we start to lose that, that's very dangerous I think for the BBC."

Endeavour's final miles turn into all-night affair

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The space shuttle Endeavour is finally on the home stretch of its journey through Los Angeles streets to its retirement at a museum.

Officials are estimating that the space craft will reach the California Science Museum around 6 a.m. PDT Sunday.

It was originally expected to arrive early Saturday evening, but it hit repeated delays throughout the day.

The Endeavour was towed out of Los Angeles International Airport early Friday and by Saturday morning it was 90 minutes ahead of schedule. But accumulated hurdles and hiccups caused it to run hours behind at day's end.

The problems included longer than expected maintenance of the rig carrying the shuttle and physical obstacles within the shuttle's wingspan including light posts, building edges, and most of all trees.

The thousands of people watching along the streets remained peaceful and their mood at times seemed festive. Police report they haven't made a single arrest.
