(AP) ? Oscar Pistorius is "numb with shock as well as grief" after the shooting death of his model girlfriend at his home in South Africa, the runner's uncle said Saturday, as his family strongly denied prosecutors' claims that he murdered her.

Arnold Pistorius spoke with The Associated Press and two other South African journalists about his nephew's arrest in the killing of Reeva Steenkamp, who was shot four times on the morning of Valentine's Day. Arnold Pistorius spoke to reporters from the garden of his three-story home in the eastern suburbs of South Africa's capital, Pretoria.

The statement, the first on camera and directly made in person by Pistorius' family, also came out strongly against prosecutors seeking to upgrade the charge against Pistorius to one of premeditated murder, which carries a sentence of life in prison.

"After consulting with legal representatives, we deeply regret the allegation of premeditated murder," Arnold Pistorius said. "We have no doubt there is no substance to the allegation and that the state's own case, including its own forensic evidence, strongly refutes any possibility of a premeditated murder or murder as such."

He said the family was "battling to come to terms with Oscar being charged with murder."

The track star's arrest in the killing of 29-year-old Steenkamp shocked South Africa, where Pistorius was a national hero and icon dubbed the Blade Runner for his high-tech carbon fiber running blades and revered for overcoming his disability to compete at the London Olympics. She was discovered in a pool of blood before dawn Thursday by police called to Pistorius' upscale home in a gated community. Authorities said she had been shot four times, and a 9 mm pistol was recovered at the home.

Pistorius remains held at a police station pending a bail hearing Tuesday. Police have already said they'll oppose Pistorius being released before trial. A premeditated murder charge also makes it more difficult for his defense team to get bail.

On Saturday afternoon, Pistorius' lawyers visited the Brooklyn police station in Pretoria, where the athlete is being held. His younger sister Aimee, who stood alongside Arnold Pistorius when he made his statement, also was at the police station later.

There will be a variety of hearings before Pistorius, 26, could go on trial. In South Africa, there are no juries, so a judge ultimately would decide Pistorius' guilt or innocence, sometimes with the help of two advisers. At an initial hearing Friday, Pistorius sobbed and held his head in his hands at times. He has yet to enter a plea in the case.

The family denial that Pistorius committed murder doesn't necessarily mean that they say he didn't shoot her, as murder is a legal term. Initial speculation immediately after the shooting Thursday suggested that it could have been accidental, though police say they are not currently considering that.

Arnold Pistorius did not discuss the circumstances of the shooting, but said that his nephew and Steenkamp had become very close since they started dating in November.

"They had plans together and Oscar was happier in his private life than he had been for a long time," the uncle said.

As Arnold Pistorius read his statement, Pistorius' sister Aimee stood nearby and broke down in tears at one point. Her uncle stopped reading for a moment to put his right arm around her. Pistorius remains very close with his uncle, a man he once lived with as a teenager.

"Words cannot adequately describe our feelings," his uncle said. "The lives of our entire family have been turned upside down forever by this unimaginable human tragedy and Reeva's family have suffered a terrible loss. As a family we are trying to be strong and supportive to Oscar as any close family would be in these dreadful circumstances."

The entire family was "devastated," Pistorius' uncle said, and was "grieving for Reeva, her family and her friends."

Since news of the killing, shock waves have rippled across South Africa, a nation of 50 million where nearly 50 people are killed each day, one of the world's highest murder rates. U.N. statistics say the nation has the second highest rate of shooting deaths in the world, behind only Colombia. Others have focused their attention on Pistorius and his fascination with fast cars, cage fighting and firearms.

Steenkamp, who graduated from law school, is known in South Africa for appearing in commercials and as a bikini-clad model in men's magazines. On Saturday, South Africa's state broadcaster SABC planned to air a reality TV show featuring the model. Another portion of the show released earlier Saturday included a clip of her swimming with two dolphins, which tap her on the cheek with their snouts.

"I think the way that you go out, not just your journey in life, but the way that you go out and the way you make your exit is so important," the blonde-haired Steenkamp says in the video. "You either made an impact in a positive or a negative way, but just maintain integrity and maintain class and just remain true to yourself.

"I'm going to miss you all so much and I love you very, very much."

Facebook hit by 'sophisticated attack'; Java zero-day exploit to blame

facebook-icon
(Image via CNET)

Facebook was hacked last month, the company said today, but was keen to stress that they have not found any evidence that user data was compromised.

In the note, the one-billion strong social network?the largest in the world?said that while it is "frequently targeted by those who want to disrupt or access our data and infrastructure," company employee laptops became infected after visiting a Web site containing malware.

Facebook said that it suffered at the hands of a Java zero-day exploit that was able to bypass the software's sandbox?a system that keeps whatever applet is running in a safe place away from system files.

This was reported to Oracle and has since been fixed.?It is believed that?Java 7 (Update 13)?fixed the exploit,?which was released on February 1, according to timing, but Facebook did not go into specifics.

In this case, Facebook's Security team noticed a suspicious domain in its corporate domain name (DNS) logs which was traced to an employee laptop, suggesting that hackers may have been able to access the internal Facebook corporate network. A malicious file was identified and the firm "flagged several other compromised employee laptops."

The company also noted that the Web site hosting the exploit which installed malware on the laptops despite being fully patched and running up-to-date anti-virus software.?Once these machines were identified, law enforcement was contacted and "continues" to investigate the hack.

Facebook's Security team is typically "successful in preventing harm before it happens," and investigates often before anything occurs. The team has also been?behind the assisted takedown of an 11 million strong botnet, giving assistance to the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI.

Facebook published the note disclosing the security breach nearly half an hour after the markets closed. $FB?closed down 0.6 percent and fell slightly further after market close.

The "sophisticated attack" that hit the social network's internal network seems to tie in at around the same time that major news and media organizations were hit by cyberattacks, which are understood to have been perpetrated by Chinese hackers or agents working on behalf of the government.

Facebook said that it was "not alone in this attack,"?adding:

It is clear that others were attacked and infiltrated recently as well. As one of the first companies to discover this malware, we immediately took steps to start sharing details about the infiltration with the other companies and entities that were affected. We plan to continue collaborating on this incident through an informal working group and other means.

China is no stranger to hacking. In 2010, Google pulled out of the country altogether after its networks were compromised by the Chinese government.?

Predicting key property in Andromeda's satellites

Feb. 14, 2013 ? Using modified laws of gravity, researchers from Case Western Reserve University and Weizmann Institute of Science closely predicted a key property measured in faint dwarf galaxies that are satellites of the nearby giant spiral galaxy Andromeda.

The predicted property in this study is the velocity dispersion, which is the average velocity of objects within a galaxy relative to each other. Astronomers can use velocity dispersion to determine the accelerations of objects within the galaxy and, roughly, the mass of a galaxy, and vice-versa.

To calculate the velocity dispersion for each dwarf galaxy, the researchers utilized Modified Newtonian Dynamics, MOND for short, which is a hypothesis that attempts to resolve what appears to be an insufficient amount of mass in galaxies needed to support their orbital speeds.

MOND suggests that, under a certain condition, Newton's law of gravity must be altered. That hypothesis is less widely accepted than the hypothesis that all galaxies contain unseen dark matter that provides needed mass.

"MOND comes out surprisingly well in this new test," said Stacy McGaugh, astronomy professor at Case Western Reserve. "If we're right about dark matter, this shouldn't happen."

McGaugh teamed with Mordehai Milgrom, the father of MOND and professor of physics and astrophysics at Weizmann Institute in Israel. Their study, "Andromeda Dwarfs in the Light of MOND" will be published in the Astrophysical Journal.

Astronomers and physicists need some way to explain why galaxies rotate faster than predicted by the law of gravity without flying apart. That spurred researchers to theorize that dark matter, first assumed by Dutch astronomer Jan Oort in 1932, is gathered in and around galaxies, adding the mass needed to hold galaxies together.

Dissatisfied with that hypothesis, Milgrom offered MOND, which says that Newton's force law must be tweaked at low acceleration, eleven orders of magnitude lower than what we feel on the surface of Earth. Acceleration above that threshold is linearly proportional to the force of gravity -- as Newton's law states -- but below the threshold, is not, he posits. When the force law is tweaked under that limitation, the modification can resolve the mass discrepancy.

Early in his career, McGaugh believed in dark matter. But, over time, he's found the hypothesis comes up short in a number of aspects while he's found increasing evidence that supports MOND.

In this paper, researchers tested MOND with dwarf spheroidal galaxies. These very low-surface brightness galaxies are satellites of larger galaxies. By the standards of galaxies they are tiny, containing only a few hundred thousand stars.

"These dwarfs are spread exceedingly thin. Their light is spread over hundreds to thousands of light-years. These systems pose a strong test of MOND because their low stellar density predicts low accelerations," McGaugh said.

McGaugh and Milgrom used the luminosity of the galaxies, an indicator of stellar mass, and MOND to make their calculations and predict the velocity dispersions of 17 faint galaxies. In 16 cases, the predictions closely matched the velocity dispersions measured by others. In the last case, the data from independent observers differed from one another.

"Many predictions were bang on," McGaugh said. "Typically, the better the data, the better the agreement."

The scientists also used MOND to predict velocity dispersions for 10 more faint dwarf galaxies in Andromeda. They are awaiting measurements to refute or verify this prediction.

Scion FR-S Convertible (in Toyota GT86 form) spied in South Africa

Toyota GT86 convertible - spy shot - croppedThough the eventual existence of a convertible version of the Toyota GT86 (and its Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ versions for America) is a no-brainer, we've yet to get a glimpse of the real-deal car until now.

Spotted in Cape Town, South Africa, of all places, this completely undisguised GT86 convertible seems to be in a remarkably advanced state of development. The image seen here was obviously sniped from quite a distance and without the aid of a powerful lens, but we can still make out a production-ready looking piece of rear bodywork for the convertible top to hide away in, as well as a functioning trunk lid. It's hard to make out with any certainty, based on this evidence, but there does seem to be space retained behind the front seats for two, small rear chairs.

With the first car spotted, we'd expect to seem some more and better images of it flow through in the near future, and if not, Toyota has already confirmed a concept version for next month's Geneva Motor Show, dubbed FT-86 Open, so stay tuned. For now, click through to the FT86Club.com forum to have a slightly closer look at the images.

Inslee aims to grow aerospace jobs with tax incentives, education

Jay Inslee speaks at the Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance annual meeting Wednesday evening at the Lynnwood Convention Center.

Gov. Jay Inslee offered a number of central elements in his plan to encourage Washington state as an aerospace cluster to several rounds of applause at the Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance annual meeting Wednesday evening at the Lynnwood Convention Center.

Among the ideas that seemed to be especially well received by the manufacturing executives were a proposal to create tax incentives to encourage Washington?s carbon-fiber industry, and a tax exemption for the storage and repair of large private aircraft, including VIP Boeing jets.

He said there would be no loss from exempting these aircraft, because their owners don?t bring them to Washington anyway, but instead send them to low-tax areas elsewhere in the world.

As for the carbon-fiber tax incentive, he called it ?one of the best opportunities that Washington has,? adding, ?We want to be seen worldwide as the carbon-fiber capital of the world."

Other points included growing a skilled work force with 500 new student slots and creating a national center for aviation biofuels in the state.

In his remarks before the roughly 400 delegates to the aerospace meeting, Inslee emphasized his roots in aerospace, remembering when he got to climb aboard a Boeing 707 when he was 10 years old.

?I thought I?d died and gone to heaven,? he said, calling himself ?an unabashed addict of the aerospace industry.?

He said he wants any company thinking of investing in Washington to contact him before it does, adding that he also wants to talk to any executive who might take a company out of the state.

?I think we are an extremely attractive place for international investors in aerospace,? he said, adding that after a conversation with an Airbus executive, he?s hoping that Airbus will source more of its parts from Washington.

Steve Wilhelm covers manufacturing, aerospace and trade for the Puget Sound Business Journal.

New York University's Labs Rebuild After Sandy

Adam Gault / Getty Images/OJO Images RF

It?s been three months since Hurricane Sandy barreled along the East Coast, plunging the majority of Manhattan and surrounding boroughs into darkness, and displacing hundreds of people from their homes. As neighborhoods continue to rebuild, and in honor of the three-month anniversary, President Obama recently signed the much-anticipated Sandy Relief Bill for $50.5 billion.

One group awaiting some of that recovery funding are scientists and researchers from New York University (NYU), who lost years of research in cancer and neuroscience when the storm knocked out the power supporting their freezers, and water flooded their animal facilities, drowning their mice.

On the night the storm surge hit the city, the power outage at the NYU Langone Medical Center became a closely followed emergency. A?fuel oil storage caused the hospital?s ?back-up generators to?malfunction,?and about 300 patients were evacuated to neighboring hospitals in the city. In the same outage, NYU?s scientific animal research centers, including the Smilow Research Center, one of the largest animal research facilities housing lab mice and specimens critical to heart disease, cancer and brain research, were severely damaged.

?It is not very different from someone losing their entire home. For scientists, their research is their lifeline,? says Dr. Dafni Bar-Sagi, senior vice president and vice dean for science and chief scientific officer for NYU. ?For someone who started three to four years ago, and just got to a point to launch their research program, it?s time to rewind and start from fresh.?

(MORE: Storm Destroys Valuable Medical Research)

In the 36 hours leading up to the storm, a team of NYU Langone staff members led by Jennifer Pullium, director of the division of laboratory animal resources at the NYU Langone Medical Center, prepared the lab animals for the incoming storm by stockpiling food and bedding and moving cages to higher shelves. It should?ve been enough to keep the valuable lab mice alive for up to 10 days if the scientists couldn?t reach them before then.

The animals were kept in the basement, a decision that?s been questioned, but the university insists it is a standard industry practice. Study animals must be kept in controlled cycles of light and dark?something that?s easiest in the absence of natural light. Most of the equipment used to maintain the animals is typically too heavy for upper floors and the animals are also kept in near-sterile ?super clean? conditions, meaning moving them without an urgent need would compromise their health.

Should they have been moved? Perhaps. But the researchers insist the storm was an unprecedented event for NYU, and equally unexpected.

The medical center?s emergency power system was supposed to withstand a flood surge of approximately 12 feet, but with estimates of the actual surge at two feet higher, the hospital quickly plunged into darkness and staff members securing the animals scattered. ?It was a matter of minutes until we had to get our staff out for their own safety,? says Pullium. It happened so fast.?

Bar-Sagi says she realized the worst was possible when the power in her own apartment quickly sputtered out. After a sleepless night, she walked to the hospital at 4 a.m. to assess the damage. Communication lines were down, but NYU researchers throughout the city hurried to the scene to save whatever biological specimens they could from their failing fridges. For the following four days, Bar-Sagi orchestrated research evacuation efforts and held meetings in stairwells and empty offices to calm concerns of desperate researchers unable to get to their animals.

After the storm

IMG_2175 Courtesy of NYU

NYU researchers working to save lab materials.

A week after the storm, when the flooding had subsided, workers used crowbars to break into the basement at Smilow, and discovered 600 cages on the upper shelves still housed living lab mice. They cut holes through the ceiling and lifted the cages through, four at a time. The discovery was a silver lining, but considering a total of 7,660 cages of mice and 22 cages of rats were trapped in total, the loss was still overwhelming for many.

Months after the storm, NYU researchers are still working in makeshift labs throughout New York City. Some have set up shop in their colleagues? labs on the NYU campus, and others are working at neighboring research institutions like Rockefeller University, an unconventional collaboration given the competitive nature of science community, similar to two rival sports teams sharing training time.

The researchers hardest hit are those who rely on animals for the better part of their experiments, such as Dr. Gordon Fishell, the associate director of the NYU Neuroscience Institute, whose work focuses on connecting brain function to disease. Fishell?s lab chemicals survived for the most part, but he lost most of his mouse population that was critical to his investigation of diseases like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and epilepsy. ?[The mice] are our partners in discovery. We care a lot about them,? says Fishell.

Mice make ideal models for scientific research of human diseases, since they are easy to manipulate genetically. But when scientists modify the mice with specific genetic tweaks, they are difficult to replace. Fortunately, Fishell, like many other researchers, shared some of his strains with other research institutions that are willing to provide him with mice for breeding, making the task slightly less daunting.

Still, before Sandy hit, Fishell had approximately 800 different strains of mice, of which about 20 were uniquely bred by his team, each with several layers of modifications that he was tracking over several generations. ?These mice cost quite a bit. Anywhere from on the low-end of $20,000 [to] the high end [of] well over $100,000 to make,? says Fishell.

And that?s not accounting for the time that he and his lab members devoted to breeding the animals. It takes eight weeks for male mice to mature sufficiently to reproduce, six weeks for female mice, and gestation lasts about 19 days. It takes even longer depending on how many generations are needed to pass along the modifications. ?It takes about a year to produce them if everything is ideal and perfect, and usually everything isn?t,? says Fishell.

?We are in an incredibly vigorous and exciting time for brain research. A year of lost time is a year of lost time,? says Fishell. ?Maybe you?re ahead of people, and suddenly you?ve lost that year and nothing stays still.?

(MORE:?How Disasters Bring Out Our Kindness)

Similarly, Mary Helen Barcellos-Hoff, a professor of radiation oncology and cell biology at NYU and her team lost mouse populations involved in studies of how radiation exposure increases cancer risk as well as how radiation can be targeted to treat tumors. Her group lost their mice as well as their radiation equipment, including a brand new, half million-dollar machine that took two years to obtain.

When the power went out, Barcellos-Hoff?s researchers spent hours climbing up and down eight flights of stairs, trying to save specimens stored in thawing freezers. ?They trudged in the dark, carrying our precious samples that we stored from experiments we have already completed,? says Barcellos-Hoff. ?We work on those for years, and those are the most precious things in our laboratory. We can always replace equipment, we can always replace reagents, we can even replace mice, but replacing an experiment that took you two years to complete is really tedious.?

Acting quickly, Barcellos-Hoff?s team was able to rev up some of their ongoing studies to meet deadlines, but were forced to terminate others. Even though some of their mice survived the storm, Barcellos-Hoff says they could never account for the effect that the week and a half the animals spent in the dark might have had on the results.

Awaiting Funding

Despite the challenges, the researchers are optimistic that they will be able to resume most of their work. Their slow-moving recovery is frustrating, but support from the academic community has provided hope. Within four days, Fishell received 100 emails from competing scientists offering their services and even volunteering to breed mice for him.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Francis Collins and NIH Deputy Director for Extramural Research Sally Rockey also visited NYU to survey the wreckage and show solidarity. ?I can tell you the damage is truly appalling,? Collins wrote on his blog. ?Some of the labs are unusable because the infrastructure has been essentially obliterated.? The NIH promised to help ease the transition by altering submission deadlines for grants, negotiating new goals for ongoing projects and extending training hours for new researchers.

The greatest relief will likely come from the funding the NIH allocates toward NYU. ?Currently, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is sorting out how much of the $195 million Emergency Fund from the Sandy Relief Bill will go to HHS agencies, like the NIH. After that, NYU will await guidance on how much funding they can apply for and hopefully receive.

In the meantime, all they can do is work with what they have and wait. But the researchers remain patient, because they don?t have another choice. ?It takes a certain level of courage to do science,? says Fishell. ?These people are betting their entire careers that they can do something no one has done before, get a result they can interpret, and discover something. I?d say [my researchers] gave themselves about 24 hours to sit there and think, ?Oh my God. How can I get by this?? and then they got back on, and have not looked back.?

Flood research shows human habits die hard: Few make plans to cut vulnerability

Feb. 12, 2013 ? New research has come up with ways to quickly assess flood damage to houses while also showing most people didn't intend to make changes to reduce their vulnerability after the 2010-11 floods in Australia.

Two separate reports from the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility released February 13 show how lessons learned from households affected by the 2010-11 Australian floods can minimise damage under current and future climates.

The report Analysis of Damage to Buildings Following the 2010 Eastern Australia Floods evaluated the role of development controls and analysed house damage to inform flood risk estimation. Based on damage to buildings in Brisbane, Ipswich and Grantham, the project developed a model to rapidly assess impacts following a flood, such as estimating building losses and the likely need to relocate people.

Lead author Dr Matthew Mason said "There are new amendments for flood planning coming into force this year within the Building Code of Australia but some of the issues our research identified are excluded." The new code will not require rebuilt homes to be more resilient to flood and does not address homes built in areas prone to storm surge or flash flooding.

The second report, Impact of the 2010 floods and the factors that inhibit and enable household adaptation strategies is based on surveys and interviews with people directly affected by floods in Brisbane and Emerald in Queensland, and Donald in Victoria.

Lead author Dr Deanne Bird said, "There was a lot of frustration over communication.

"After the floods receded, people needed to know what to do, where to get information, how to implement changes to reduce vulnerability, and how to deal with insurance companies."

Their study shows many residents made general home improvements such as installing their 'dream' kitchen rather than concentrating on making their home more resilient to flooding, for example by raising cupboards and air-conditioning units or changing floor coverings.

While most respondents indicated that they were not likely to make any changes to reduce their vulnerability to flood, 55 percent stated that they were likely to, or already had, changed their insurance policy.

Many residents felt they had no options to make changes due to the structural design of their home. In other instances, insurers would only pay to replace like with like.

According to Dr Bird "We saw communities getting on with their lives and largely driving their recovery with stoic endurance. This does not necessarily translate to adaptation to future events but it does reflect strong resilience in the community."

Published: Feb. 13, 2013 at 1:48 AM

OAKLAND, Calif., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- The anticipated high-scoring shootout between Golden State and Houston came to pass Tuesday with the Rockets nabbing a 116-107 road win over the Warriors.

James Harden led the Rockets with 27 points and seven rebounds and Chandler Parsons racked up 21 points and eight boards.

Houston, who have won seven of their last 10 games, also had 14 points and 10 assists from Jeremy Lin. Omer Asik also had a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

The Rockets are second in the NBA in per-game scoring. Golden State is No. 8.

Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 27 points. Klay Thompson and Jerret Jack both had 22 points. Golden State lost its fifth consecutive game.

Houston took 91 shots from the field -- 34 from 3-point range -- and connected on 43 for a 47.3-percent shooting average and narrowly won the battle of the boards 48-46. The Warriors shot 45.2 percent from the field but was 23-of-31 from the free-throw line.

Adidas introduces sleeves to NBA jerseys

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Adidas America Inc. on Monday introduced arguably the biggest aesthetic change to the National Basketball Association since the end of the short shorts era.

Sleeves are coming to the shoulders of the NBA's Golden State Warriors later this month, and to several other NBA franchises starting next season, said Lawrence Norman, who runs the German athletic footwear and apparel company's global basketball business from its Portland-based U.S. headquarters.

Adidas introduced the new yellow, short-sleeved jersey during an event in Oakland, Calif.'s Oracle Arena Monday afternoon, officially making the Warriors the first modern-era NBA franchise to don the court in something other than the traditional tank top. The team will first wear them competitively against the San Antonio Spurs on Feb. 22.

While company and team officials tout the uniform's technical attributes (even with sleeves, the jersey is 26 percent lighter than the Warriors' regular jersey) the introduction of sleeves has a practical application aimed at juicing sales of NBA fan gear.

Though fans can certainly wear NBA jerseys during all seasons with shirts underneath, they seem far less consumer-friendly than their sleeved counterparts in the National Football League or in soccer leagues worldwide. (As a jersey consumer, I own five football jerseys, two baseball jerseys, and a half dozen soccer jerseys, but haven't bought a replica NBA jersey since I was in junior high, largely because I shun tank tops.)

The sleeved NBA jersey is Adidas solution to that problem.

?I think that the cool thing about this is that there is the opportunity to change the way the players play on the court and the way fans support their team forever,? Norman said. ?Kids can support (their teams) in the city, but also wear them in the hallways and malls in ways that they can?t do with a tank top.?

Adidas says it's been working with the Warriors for 18 months to develop the uniform, and Norman calls the team the perfect candidate to launch the sleeved jerseys. It's a young, aggressive team, near the heart of the nation's Silicon Valley innovation hub, with a new ownership group led by venture capitalist Joe Lacob and renowned Hollywood producer Peter Gruber that Norman calls visionary.

?It was cool because we were presenting to Peter, a Hollywood icon, and he stopped us midstream and said, ?I get it. We?re in,?? Norman said. ?It made sense to launch it in the Bay Area. This is the most innovative hub in the United States.?

The Warriors ? coincidentally or not, one of two NBA teams (the Brooklyn Nets being the other) to employ in-stadium Adidas-run team shops ? are far from the only team to hear this pitch from Adidas.

Close to two years ago, while sitting in the office of Adidas America President Patrik Nilsson, I spotted a large, bound book with a white cover that said "Brooklyn Nets." The Nets at the time were still in New Jersey but had announced their plans to move to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn beginning with this season.

The book, as Nilsson showed me, had Adidas' design concepts for the Brooklyn Nets which included some sketches for a short-sleeved basketball jersey.

?We?ve made the presentations. We expect other NBA teams to come on board as early as the 2013-14 season,? Norman said. ?The interest has been strong across the board.?

Lack of energy an enemy to antibiotic-resistant microbes

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Rice University researchers "cured" a strain of bacteria of its ability to resist an antibiotic in an experiment that has implications for a long-standing public health crisis.

Rice environmental engineer Pedro Alvarez and his team managed to remove the ability of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa microorganism to resist the antibiotic medication tetracycline by limiting its access to food and oxygen.

Over 120 generations, the starving bacteria chose to conserve valuable energy rather than use it to pass on the plasmid ? a small and often transmissible DNA element ? that allows it to resist tetracycline.

The researchers' results, reported this month in the American Chemical Society journal Environmental Science and Technology, are the latest in a long effort to understand the environmental aspects of antibiotic resistance, which threatens decades of progress in fighting disease.

"The propagation of antibiotic resistance has been perceived as a medical or microbiology-related problem," Alvarez said. "And it truly is a serious problem. But what many people miss is that it is also an environmental pollution problem. A lot of the antibiotic-resistant bacteria originate in animal agriculture, where there is overuse, misuse and abuse of antibiotics."

Alvarez contended that confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are potential sources of environmental contamination by antibiotics and the associated antibiotic-resistant genes that find their way into the ground, water and ultimately the food supply.

"We started with the hypothesis that microbes don't like to carry excess baggage," he said. "That means they will drop genes they're not using because there is a metabolic burden, a high energy cost, to keeping them."

The Rice researchers tested their theory on two strains of bacteria, P. aeruginosa, which is found in soil, and E. coli, which carries resistant genes directly from animals through their feces into the environment.

By slowly starving them of nutrients and/or oxygen through successive generations, they found that in the absence of tetracycline, both microbes dumped the resistance plasmid, though not entirely in the case of E. coli. But P. aeruginosa completely shed the genetic element responsible for resistance, which made it susceptible once again to antibiotics. When a high level of tetracycline was present, both microbes retained a level of resistance.

One long-recognized problem with antibiotics is that they tend to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. If any antibiotic-resistant bacteria are part of a biological mix, whether in a person, an animal or in the environment, the weak microbes will die and the resistant will survive and propagate; this process is known by biologists as "selective pressure."

So there is incentive to eliminate the resistance plasmid from bacteria in the environment as close to the source as possible. The experiments point to possible remediation strategies, Alvarez said. "There are practical implications to what we did," he said. "If we can put an anaerobic barrier at the point where a lagoon drains into the environment, we will essentially exert selective pressure for the loss of antibiotic-resistant genes and mitigate the propagation of these factors."

An anaerobic barrier may be as cheap and simple as mulch in the drainage channel, he said. "If you have a CAFO draining through a channel, then put an anaerobic barrier in that channel. A mulch barrier will do." He said a mulch barrier only a meter thick could contact slow-moving groundwater for more than a month. "That may not kill the bacteria, but it's enough to have bacteria notice a deficiency in their ability to obtain energy from the environment and feel the stress to dump resistant genes."

Alvarez has been chipping away at the problem since moving to Rice from the University of Iowa in 2004, even without American funding for research. His study of the Haihe River in China, funded by the Chinese government and published last year, found tetracycline resistance genes are common in the environment there as well. "We tested water and river sediment and couldn't find a sample that didn't have them," he said.

"Our philosophy in environmental engineering is that an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of remediation," Alvarez said. "Prevention here is, basically, don't let these genes proliferate. Don't let them amplify in the environment. Stop them before they're released. And one easy way is to put up an anaerobic barrier."

Father charged in fatal shooting after Texas wreck

HOUSTON (AP) -- A Texas man has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting at a crash scene of a suspected drunken driver who authorities say plowed into his sons as they helped push their family's broken-down pickup truck along a dark, narrow, rural road.

David Barajas, 31, and his sons, 12-year-old David Jr. and 11-year-old Caleb, were about 50 yards from their Houston-area home when a car crashed into them. David Jr. died at the scene, while Caleb died later at a hospital.

Neighbors said they heard gunshots minutes after the Dec. 7 crash near Alvin, about 30 miles southeast of Houston. Jose Banda, the 20-year-old driver who hit the boys, was later found shot in the head. His death was ruled a homicide.

Brazoria County sheriff's investigator Dominick Sanders said Monday that witnesses told authorities they saw Barajas, right after the crash, walk to his home and then return a few minutes later and approach Banda's vehicle. Evidence showed one shot was fired, he said.

"Every time we would pursue a lead, it always came back to Mr. Barajas," Sanders said. "We have numerous statements placing him there at the car in close proximity to the victim at the time the gunshot was fired."

Barajas was indicted for murder Friday and turned himself in Sunday. He was being held Monday in the Brazoria County Jail on a $450,000 bond. Court records did not list an attorney for him.

Gabriel Barajas, David Barajas' brother, had previously said his sibling had remembered the crash as a "blur" and called speculation that his brother or another family member might have been responsible for Banda's murder "ugly."

Barajas' wife, Cindy, was in the truck when it was hit, along with the couple's 8-year-old daughter and 3-month-old son.

A search of Barajas' home found ammunition that is consistent with the bullet that killed Banda, but authorities have not located the weapon used in the shooting, Sanders said. The case is "going to be much more difficult if we don't have a weapon," he added.

Gunshot residue tests were done on both Barajas and Banda, and authorities are still waiting for those results, Sanders said.

Investigators also are awaiting DNA test results of some "biological material" that was found at the scene. Sanders declined to elaborate on the material that is being tested.

Boeing completes 'uneventful' 787 test flight

CHICAGO - Boeing Co. completed what it called an uneventful flight on Saturday of a test 787 Dreamliner, its first since the airplanes were grounded more than three weeks ago after a series of battery-related problems.

The test flight to gather detailed information on the airplane's lithium-ion batteries lasted two hours and 19 minutes, taking off from and returning to Boeing Field in Seattle, Boeing said.

"The crew reports that the flight was uneventful," Boeing said in a statement.

The 50 Dreamliners in commercial service were grounded worldwide on Jan. 16 after a series of battery-related incidents including a fire on board a parked 787 at Boston's Logan International Airport and an in-flight problem on another airplane in Japan.

The groundings have cost airlines tens of millions of dollars, with no solution yet in sight.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said on Thursday it would allow 787 test flights, under more stringent rules, to monitor the batteries in flight.

Boeing said the information gathered during the flight was part of the investigations into the battery events that occurred in January and that additional details could not be shared.

The airplane is Boeing's fifth 787 flight test airplane, marked as ZA005, and the only member of the test fleet in service. The flight had a crew of 13, including pilots and testing personnel, Boeing said.

Boeing said no flights of the airplane were planned on Sunday, but it planned to resume flights early in the coming week. Boeing does not provide advance flight schedules.

NBA Fast Break: Knicks, Lakers Snatch Defeat From The Jaws Of Victory

The first Sunday following football season is always a transition period for sports fans. Some deal with it better than others. Some shrivel in a corner in the fetal position and question the meaning of life as the opening of training camps seem forever and a week away. Myself? I?m fine because it allows me to focus all my attention on the world?s best sport anyway, basketball. The NBA?s first big Sunday featured a pair of games on ABC with four of the league?s poster-teams ? Knicks Vs. Clippers and Heat Vs. Lakers.

Both games played out the same way. A close game for three quarters with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and the Heat and Chris Paul and the Clippers pulling away in the final frame. How exactly did this happen? It?s a simple answer only need in four words. Grant Hill and turnovers.

Even in a loss, Carmelo Anthony continued to solidify his MVP-caliber season. He had 42 points and eight rebounds; his fifth 40-point effort of the season. The rest of the team amassed 46 points. But when it came down to winning time in the fourth, the bottom dropped out for the Knicks. Maybe Carmelo got tired, but credit Grant Hill ? yes, Grant Hill ? with slowing Melo down rendering him essentially ineffective. He hounded Anthony into bad shots, turnovers and set the stage for Chris Paul to put the game on ice finishing with 25-6-7-4.

It was inspirational, really. So if there?s an unusual amount of old heads at the gym attempting to run full-court after work today, chances are Grant is the reason. He really helped turn a close game into a laugher before anyone realized what was going on.

The Clippers being fully healthy (except Caron Butler hurting his back) was also an important factor in Sunday?s victory. Friday in Miami was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time against the wrong team with the absolute worst player to face. On Sunday, the only thing better than the Clips bench (outscored New York?s 48-15) and Grant Hill?s Elmer?s glue defense was Justin Timberlake?s marketing scheme at the Grammys. And Jennifer Lopez?s leg handcrafted by the gods themselves.

Meanwhile, about 900 miles south on I-95, the Lakers stood toe-to-toe with Miami for 42 minutes. Despite the 107-97 loss, the Lakers are still 7-3 in their last 10. They look like a totally different team who appear to be on the brink of realizing the magnitude of the hole they?ve put themselves in. And yes, I?m just trying to give Laker Nation some sort of hope. The fact of the matter is this: L.A. lost for two main reasons.

1. LeBron James is playing out of his mind, as in he?s 49 of his last 65 (32-7-4-3 in the flow of the game on Sunday). His last five games of at least 30 points and 60% shooting him only the third player in the history of the game to produce those numbers (Moses Malone and Adrian Dantley being the other two). Swept under the rug because of James and one of the all-time great runs, Dwyane Wade has been playing out of his mind lately, including 30 points on 12-18 shooting on Sunday.

2. The Lakers? sloppiness in the fourth quarter played into their demise. They had seven turnovers in the first 36 minutes, and seven in the final 12 leading to all sorts break-away dunks from LeBron.

The funny thing is, regardless of what happens to the Lakers this season, Earl Clark is using this run as his coming out party like he?s ?Sunshine? from Remember The Titans. It?s difficult to fault a guy using an opportunity to showcase his talent to a league which had basically relegated him to bench warrior status the first few years of his career. Regardless, my biggest question from yesterday?s loss ? aside from how Dwight only manages to get nine field goal attempts in 41 minutes ? is why Steve Nash is forced to play off the ball so much in the fourth quarter.

The only time Nash was even a factor in the final quarter was when he was attempting to flee for dear life when LeBron was barreling towards him 125 miles an hour. I?m no analyst, but allowing Nash to run the floor making decisions when the game?s on the line just seems to makes sense. That?s what he was brought in for, right? Because that?s what Kobe was forced to do when Ramon Sessions left him no other option last season, right? It?s not like Kobe is unable to get his points moving without the ball. I mean, shit, he failed to register a shot attempt in the second half.

I digress, however. L.A. has basically two months to cover four games to at least clinch the eighth spot out West, which I fully expect of them. Godspeed, Lakers Nation. Godspeed.

Court Side Notes

? It took four quarters and three overtimes, but Boston outlasted Denver 118-114. Kevin Garnett finished with 20-18-6 and Paul Pierce with 27-14-14. In other words, what I wrote about Boston post-Rondo is completely useless. If the playoffs started today though, Boston and New York would meet in the first round, which I?m not opposed to at all. There?s no chance in hell KG and Carmelo could be cordial for seven games. Or KG and Spike Lee. There?s a better chance David D. writes a Chris Brown tribute.

? Am I the only one who thinks Kevin Love will be traded before the start of next season? I am? Cool. Minnesota lost (again) 105-88 to Memphis yesterday mainly due to the fact they have no go-to player, they?ve been ravaged by injuries and Memphis is a tough-ass defensive team.

? Luckily for Portland, the Lakers lost. Otherwise, their 110-104 loss to Orlando would have stung ever more. Nikola Vucevic?s near 20-20 game (17-19, to be exact) helped lead the charge for the Magic who probably are playing more for lottery position than anything right now. Nikola Vucevic also sounds like the name of a European spy capable of taking all of our wives/girlfriends. He?s actually a 22-year-old who went to the University of Southern California, which probably means he got high all day. Which is just fine.

? Maybe those Josh Smith rumors need to become reality. And quick. The Nets scored 36 points in the first quarter. Then scored 50 for the rest of the game. Put the pieces together and it?s not hard to see why they got ran out their own gym 111-86 to San Antonio while Jay-Z was cross-country drinking Cognac and sitting front row at the Grammys. Tony Parker finished with 29 points and 11 assists, which is a damn shame. Why? Because Parker?s been a legit MVP candidate the past three seasons now, but he?s probably never going to win one because he?s playing in a league that has LeBron in his prime, Kevin Durant approaching his prime and other superstars and superstars-in-the-making who will inevitably leap frog him. Is it right? No. Do I think anybody on the Spurs actually care? Absolutely not.

? Like Portland, Houston benefits from the Lakers loss too. Their 117-111 L to Sacramento (or Seattle) didn?t help. Isaiah Thomas could very well be the best player 70% of NBA fans either have no clue or don?t give a damn about.

? The Raptors won again to the tune of 102-89 over New Orleans. One of these days, my dream of a quadruple alley-oop will be fulfilled when Kyle Lowry tosses a half court lobs to Rudy Gay, who then leaves it in the air for DeMar DeRozan who leaves it for Terrence Ross. Tell me that wouldn?t be one of the top 10 plays of the decade when we?re discussing that type of thing in December 2019. Also, Greivis Vasquez (#GravyVasquez) had 17-7-6-2 in a losing effort. Most Improved Player, folks. Write that down.

? It seems Oklahoma City has played Phoenix 1,000th time since the start of the new year. And for the 1,000th time, the Thunder won again 97-69 behind another balanced attack, led by Russell Westbrook?s 24 points and six assists. Circle your calendars for Thursday though, folks. Miami comes to town.

India hangs man for 2001 attack on Parliament

NEW DELHI (AP) ? A Kashmiri man convicted in a 2001 attack on India's Parliament that left 14 people dead was hanged Saturday after a final mercy plea was rejected, a senior Indian Home Ministry official said.

Home Secretary R.K. Singh told reporters that Mohammed Afzal Guru was executed early Saturday morning at New Delhi's Tihar prison.

"It was the law taking its course," Singh said.

Guru was given a Muslim burial in the prison compound, Press Trust of India news agency reported. His family in the India's Jammu-Kashmir state has demanded that his body be handed over, but that seems unlikely given the highly sensitive nature of the execution.

Guru had been on death row since first being convicted in 2002. Subsequent appeals in higher courts were also rejected, and India's Supreme Court set an execution date for October 2006. But his execution was delayed after his wife filed a mercy petition with India's president. That petition, the last step in the judicial process, was turned down earlier this week.

Several rights groups across India and political groups in Indian Kashmir, have said that Guru did not get a fair trial.

Protests broke out Saturday in three parts of Indian Kashmir, including the northwestern town of Sopore, which was Guru's home. Scores of protesters chanting slogans including "We want freedom" and "Down with India" defied a curfew and clashed with police and paramilitary troops, who opened fire. Four protesters sustained bullet wounds and one of them was in critical condition, a senior police officer said on customary condition of anonymity.

Thousands of police and paramilitary troops fanned out across the state preparing for more protests and violence following the announcement of the execution. A curfew was also imposed in most parts of Indian Kashmir, and cable television channels were cut off in the region.

About 30 Kashmiri students and anti-death penalty activists clashed with Indian police and right-wing Hindu groups in New Delhi. Most of the protesters were detained by the police.

Police in Indian Kashmir on Saturday also detained several leaders of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, an umbrella organization of separatist political and religious groups, a police officer said on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to reporters.

The group called for four days mourning in the disputed region and called Guru's hanging "an attack on the collective conscience of the Kashmiri people."

"We appeal to the people to rise in one voice and protest this aggressive act so that it's known to everyone that even if the heads of Kashmiris are cut, they'll never bow under any circumstances," the group said in a statement.

The statement said that Indian Kashmir's chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who also heads the separatist alliance, was detained in New Delhi and not allowed to travel to Srinagar, the main city of Indian Kashmir.

When Guru's death sentence was handed down by India's Supreme Court it sparked protests in Kashmir, and the state government has warned that his execution could destabilize the volatile Himalayan region.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Muslim-majority Kashmir, which is divided between Hindu-dominated India and Muslim-majority Pakistan but is claimed by both nations.

Since 1989, an armed uprising in Indian-controlled Kashmir and an ensuing crackdown have killed an estimated 68,000 people, mostly civilians.

The secrecy in which Guru's execution was carried out was similar to the execution in November of Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman of the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Kasab was also buried in the western Indian prison where he was hanged.

On Dec. 13, 2001, five gunmen entered the compound of India's Parliament and opened fire. A gunbattle with security officers ensued and 14 people, including the gunmen, were killed. India blamed the Pakistan-based militant groups Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

The attack led to heightened tensions between India and its neighbor and archrival Pakistan and brought the neighbors to the brink of war, but tensions eased after intense diplomatic pressure from the international community and a promise by then-Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf to clamp down on the militants.

Guru confessed in TV interviews that he helped plot the attack, but later denied any involvement and said he was tortured into confessing.

Government prosecutors said that Guru was a member of Jaish-e-Mohammed, a charge Guru denied.

Guru's family said it had not been told that he was about to be executed.

"Indian government has yet again functioned like a fascist state and hanged him secretly," said Yasin Guru, a relative who lives in the family's compound in Sopore. "They did not have the courtesy to inform his family."
